Umbrellas Are Not A Rain Plan
Controversial opinion, I know, and I’ve been a part of some weddings that were certified bangers, despite a real rain situation. But let’s be honest, If you’re planning an outdoor wedding, you need more than good vibes and a stack of umbrellas to keep the day running smoothly. Here’s how to plan for rain like a pro:
Choose a Backup Location
Always have an indoor option ready to go. Whether it’s a cozy tent, a nearby barn, or your reception space, make sure it’s accessible and we’ll make sure it’s just as beautiful.
Invest in a Quality Tent
If staying outdoors is a must, don’t skimp on the tent. Look for options with solid sides, good drainage, and plenty of space for vendors to work comfortably.Think About Comfort
Rain usually means chilly temps, wind, and soggy grass. In my experience, the bottom 12 inches of everyone’s beautiful clothing will be soaked by the time they take their seats. It’s a good idea to make sure you have heaters, blankets, and floor coverings to keep everyone warm and dry.
Communicate Early
Let your guests and vendors know about the rain plan ahead of time. A smooth transition from Plan A to Plan B ensures your day feels seamless, no matter the weather.Keep Your Vendors in Mind
Your vendors work hard to create a beautiful day for you, and we are already 100% on board with you having the best day of your life, but setting up in a downpour without proper shelter can put health and equipment at risk. Your DJ has invested thousands of dollars on the sound equipment they are bringing to your wedding and it puts their career at risk if it gets damaged under a sad pop-up tent. A well-thought-out rain plan ensures your florals, decor, and other elements come together smoothly—and safely.Be Flexible
From a floral perspective, my job and the overall design changes depending on weather. Rain weighs down airier blooms, wind requires much more substantial structure and possibly removing any pieces above waist height, and candles become a whole situation. Ultimately, without a plan, we are flying by the seat of our pants on the day and while it’ll be beautiful, it could possibly be very different than what you expected.
Rain doesn’t have to ruin your wedding—it can add a touch of romance and adventure. I think it’s a little bit lucky to be married in a storm. But only if you’ve got a real plan in place. And if you need help making a rain plan, I am all for it. Decades of event production have given me loads of good ideas and experience and I’d love to share them.
